I am Vasilii Woitz. I defend foreign nationals in Russian criminal cases personally: I go to the investigator, to the detention centre and to the courtroom myself, and I do not hand the case to someone else halfway through.
Homicide and grievous bodily harm. Most of this work is the forensic material: what the expert actually established, and whether intent or self-defence was ever properly examined.
Offences against sexual integrity. These cases turn on the expert reports and on how the first statements were taken — that is where I start.
Drug charges, most often Art. 228.1. I check how the search and the seizure were carried out, because that is where the case is usually won or lost.
Fraud, laundering and tax cases. Alongside the defence there is the money: accounts, seized property, a business that has to keep running.
